poster design with an OC of mine inspired by Korean shamanism (무속). hanbok symbols by Chloe Koo
this project and character are an exploration of my half-korean identity and how it manifests culturally. i've been in the process of exploring superstition and luck and how i allow them to affect my everyday behavior. i grew up pretty disconnected from korean culture, but i have picked up a couple korean superstitions and i have bujeok hanging in my home and tattooed on my body (as part of sadunderthesaturn's trauma bujeok project). the initial concept for this OC was to represent my superstitious habits, but it also morphed into a representation of my imposter syndrome around korean culture and how i fit in. the character is a trickster devil masquerading as a fortune-bringing shaman, acting more out of confusion than malice. their mudang's costume and good-luck talismans cover their face and conceal their identity; they hide behind superstition, using it as a shield and a cover for their timid and indecisive personality. i guess this was kind of a vent piece, but it was also a fun exercise in developing my digital illustration style and integrating it more with design and layout elements.
